Abstract

A renowned Japanese scholar, Tai Kuo-hui, based on his experience on being marginalized, shares the feelings of gloom and dilemma of the Chinese in Southeast Asia. Tai Kuo-hui, with an excellent knowledge of world history and a good grasp of the local history and culture, explores the problems of the Chinese in Southeast Asia, as a minority facing identity crisis, and the unchanging attitude of the Chinese in Southeast Asia, Tai is understanding and sympathetic. He holds that the situation of the Southeast Asian Chinese is not peculiar to the Chinese, but has been the pursuit of the oppressed in the Third World: freedom, equality, respect for human rights and social justice, which are the issues facing mankind.
