Abstract

This research is entitled "The deletion of i‘lÄl based on the generative phonology theory" in the sound changes from the deep structure, i.e. the origin of the word, to the surface structure i.e. word vocalize. It discusses the problems of i‘lÄl process when the word changes from its origin without accurate explanation of the factors that led to these changes. This research sought to achieve two objectives: First, to clarify how to define the form for the deletion of i‘lÄl process by omission in the words containing weak vowels, the establishment of the phonological rules; and Second: to highlight the reasons for changes between the vowels and hamzah in the words vocalize from the deep structure to the surface structure. The method applied in this research is a descriptive analytical one where it first describes the phenomenon of analyzing sound in words and then, analyzing it according to the process of one change and writing it down in words that are analyzed by the International Phonetics Alphabet (IPA) to clarify the changes occurring. The research concluded that one of the factors for sound transfer in words is to reduce utterance when adjacent sounds are heard or to facilitate tongue movement when the corresponding feature is present in successive sounds in the word. Changes in the syllable also occur to the number or type of syllable.
