Abstract

Al-Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi?i (150-204 H/757-820 M) is a prominent mujtahid and mujaddid scholar of the second century of Hijrah. His position as a mujtahid scholar is proven through the establishment of a moderate mazhab of Fiqh known as mazhab al-Shafi?i. Meanwhile, his position as a mujaddid scholar is distinguished with his role in establishing Usul al-Fiqh as a discipline such as defending hadith from disobedient movements and putting the basis pertaining differences among the mazhab of within the Islamic societies. Therefore, this article on one hand will discuss in detail and analyze the above mentioned role based on the primer sources such as al-Manawi, al-Razi, Muhammad Abu Zuhrah and others and on the other hand, will elaborate the priorities of al-Shafi?i in ijtihad and tajdid al-Din
